“If I was allowed to train again to be an actor, but I was only allowed one teacher, it would have to be Mike Alfreds. To me he is a genius when it comes to acting and storytelling. I will spend my life trying to be true to what he perceives possible in the theatre. He is a true pioneer.“ Mark Rylance || Mike Alfreds is offering a masterclass of five 2-hour sessions on Laban Efforts. He will work on the eight archetypes (Floating, Gliding, Dabbing, Flicking, Slashing, Wringing, Pressing, Thrusting), exploring how body, voice, feeling and thought are integrated so that actors can function fully and equally in all aspects of their expressiveness. Laban increases the actor’s ability to break pattern, develop flexibility and provides an invaluable approach to characterisation. || The structure of the course will be, more or less: Day 1: The elements of weight, space and time: the building blocks of the Efforts || 2: Floating/Thrusting Wednesday || 3: Dabbing/Wringing Thursday || 4: Flicking/Pressing || 5: Gliding/Slashing || 6: Recapitulation of the Efforts and Characterization || 7: Applying Laban to a Text || This structure is sufficiently flexible, so that the sequence or focus of a session can vary, depending on the interest and experience of the group. The subjects of some sessions may well over-lap. The work accommodates those taking part! Also have A SOLILOQUY, MONOLOGUE OR SPEECH READY for potential use, preferably one you already know. If you have no existing speech at your disposal, make sure that you are word-perfect with whatever you choose to work on and that you have a clear and strong aim for the character. || If you have a copy of the book, DIFFERENT EVERY NIGHT, you will find several pages (229-238) on Laban Efforts in the chapter on Characterisation. || You will receive a page summarising the Efforts that you can refer to. Do not memorise them! || GVL & Bildungsprämie || Videos: MICHELLE WILLIAMS in conversation with PETER THOMSON about MIKE ALFREDS (Using Laban Efforts) || SIR IAN MCKELLEN in conversation with PETER THOMSON about MIKE ALFREDS || Informationen über Mike Alfreds [weiterlesen…]

In this introduction, we will explore the tools of the work both experientially and through dialogue. We will begin by opening the body, voice and breath, experimenting with getting off the grid and into the non habitual. As we slow down and soften the central nervous system, we will seek to drop into a relaxed, meditative space where we will humbly make contact with the unconscious through inner symbols and figures and unearth what our artistry might crave and need at this time. We will explore through our senses, our breath and voice, through gestures and our embodied deep imaginations. When we return to the topside world, there will be time to work with what came through.. Before we close, we will gather as a group and explore the unearthed material as a collective.Recommended for those students newer to the work and open to all.
Amanda Lovejoy Street is a Dream Work facilitator/coach based in upstate New York and Los Angeles. Her work explores what is unearthed when we allow unconscious impulses and images to arise. Amanda has been working with her dreams since she was a teenager. Her first introduction to the relationship between creativity and dreams was in 2005 with Sandra Seacat. Amanda found her way to Creative Dream Work in 2011 and began an in-depth apprenticeship with Kim Gillingham in 2013. She began facilitating and coaching with Creative Dream Work in 2017, working with artists of all disciplines who seek to develop a relationship with the unconscious as an ever replenishing source of creativity and depth. || GVL & Bildungsprämie || Normale Gebühr: 100 Euro inkl. As actors, directors, and writers, we often describe our work as storytelling. Yet, have we ever stopped to think about what makes a story interesting? What is it that turns a series of facts or events into a narrative? || In this two-week intensive, we will explore the elements of story structure and the art of telling it to others. Each week, we will discover new methods and tools to unlock the hidden meanings behind monologues, scenes, and fiction. Tell stories, share work, and clarify our artistic voices in order to better our individual crafts. || Tomer Adorian is a New York based director and theatre-maker. He has worked with Fordham University, The Acting Studio, Young Patrons of Lincoln Center, Columbia University, and The Barrow Group, with which he is also a Directing Mentor for their theatre program at Quinnipiac University. Mike Alfreds will be holding a further/second/another Storytelling and Adaptation Workshop, based on the techniques he describes in his book, Then What Happens?, published by Nick Hern Books who are also the publishers of his book on acting and rehearsal process for plays, Different Every Night. || This workshop is open both to those who participated in the previous workshop and to those who will be joining for the first time. What we will be dealing with is applicable to Writers, Directors and Actors. || It deals with two disciplines: the actor as a multifaceted storyteller; and ways of transforming a piece of non-dramatic writing, intended to be read (novel, story, legend, biography, poem), into a viable theatre experience, intended to be performed. || The work takes the actors into new areas of performance experience in which they not only create characters, but also become hosts, narrators, commentators, critics, designers, stage hands, musicians, editor… In short, they take on all the functions required to create theatre, even some required for film. These techniques increase their flexibility, range of expressiveness and function. Actors who experience this way of working find it empowering. || The purpose is for an actor or actors, working in an essentially empty space, to discover the appropriate techniques to put an entire book onstage, being true to its spirit, but also to its language and conventions. The intention is not to turn the material into a conventional play, but to find fresh dramatic equivalents of the techniques and devices used by the writer, so that the material is transformed into a viable and fresh piece of theatre. || The workshop explores narrative points of view, tense, plot, structure, style of language, levels of characterisation, transitions, the dramatization of descriptive narration…|| We will be using specific texts, so participants should have sufficient knowledge of English to be able to deal with possibly heightened and varying styles of language. You will be advised about what material to read. Also, it would be useful if participants could obtain a copy of Then What Happens? and had read at least Part One: Thoughtshops for Storytelling. || GVL & Bildungsprämie || Testimonials Sessions mit Mike Alfreds.pdf.
