Acting Program with Matthias Schott
What is the process for becoming a professional actor? According to Jean Benedetti, the art of the professional actor can be divided into two categories: 1. The inner creative process. 2. The guidelines and venues that shape our outward expression. The goal is to move from general to specific. Educated imagination – informed empathy – stimulated choices.
Part I: Building a Solid Foundation in Acting
In our program, we lay the groundwork for your journey as an actor. Drawing on the esteemed methods of Stanislavski and adapted techniques from influential figures such as Uta Hagen, Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg, this course provides a structured approach to understanding the key elements of acting. Through a combination of improvisations, engaging exercises, and scene work, you will enhance your imagination and ability to transform, ensuring you can perform convincingly both on stage and on screen.
Key Components:Hands-on improvisation and exercises inspired by leading British Drama Schools such as LAMDA, RADA, Guildhall, and the former Drama Centre. Extensive scene work to hone your skills.
Part II: Enhancing Your Performance Skills
A/Giving attention to the partner is the most important tool in the Meisner Technique. We learn to be spontaneous and honest with our partner by using Sanford Meisner’s techniques, but we also draw inspiration from other theatre traditions to bring in more physicality and vocal expression. To allow ourselves to be met and to be touched by the shared interaction in such a way that a credible encounter occurs. By daring to express our point of view in response to what the other person says or does, we enable and challenge the other person to respond authentically in a new way. By practicing, we learn to trust our impulses. The aim is to enable truthful behaviour in imagined scene circumstances.
B/In this part of the program, we will explore methods to deepen your performances and emotional preparation. Participants will engage with scenes, mini-monologues, self-taping/audition pieces, and focus on layered character development.
This part encourages creativity, clarity, boldness, and confidence in your acting. Starting from a place of truth, we lead participants to establish meaningful connections with the character and text. Through improvisation, character relationship exercises, and object work, you’ll discover insights that draw on your own life experiences and imagination.
This exploration of the character’s life will enable you to make informed choices and define your scenic goals. The process will require curiosity and a non-judgmental approach to embrace your own vulnerabilities, fears, and strengths, which will ultimately enrich your character portrayal.
Part III: Unlocking Your Creative Potential
The goal of our acting class is to cultivate the actor’s inner state of being and unlock the subconscious, encouraging spontaneity in performance. By engaging in improvised exercises aimed at liberating both your physical and emotional self, you will achieve a profound connection with the characters you portray.
Utilising Uta Hagen’s exercises, the program fosters self-awareness about your own behaviours while inspiring curiosity about the behaviours of others. As you understand yourself better, you will learn to identify what differentiates your character from who you are and how to view the world through their eyes.
We encourage playful exploration and imagination: Can unfamiliar characters be understood by relating it to your own experiences or/and where do you have to use your imagination and do research? What preparation resonates with you and how can you repeatedly invoke these triggers? The exercises, paired with analysing scripts and plays, provide invaluable tools for character development in film, theatre, and auditions.

“Matthias is a phenomenal acting coach. I always come back to his teachings, whether it be preparing for theatre or film. Matthias has an engaging, attentive and intuitive teaching style that nurtures each student’s journey. He identifies potential blocks and offers the tools to work through them in order to understand where you need to go to reach a level of higher awareness and understanding as an actor. He breaks down the multifaceted process through a vast variety of exercises which makes the task at hand tangible and approachable, no matter where you are in your acting journey. Matthias’ workshops make up both individual and group exercises that shape and form each student and attune to each individual level. Matthias has guided me from a fundamental level to individual scene- and character work or auditions for schools and jobs. There is a wisdom and deep sense of humanity in the way he approaches each character or scene, teaching us to challenge our understanding of the human experience, be conscious and present in our acting choices, never judge our experience or understanding of the character, but be curious, free and creative.” – Nina Mariko Sandquist (Gangs of Oslo – Blodsbrødre)
